this haunting theme tune is so evocative & poignant it makes me want to cry
.
just think of our innocent childhoods that we'll never recapture. its enough to put a lump in your throat

This series was groundbreaking back in the day. I was 8, it was broadcast during the Autumn term of 1981 and for perhaps the first (and only) time a school education programme (almost) went mainstream with this series.
I've not seen it since 1982. It would be a joy to watch it again today, nigh on 30 years later

when was this made ? 1980/81 sort of ?. in junior school we all had to trapse to the tv room.. a massive dalek sized tv on wheels with wooden doors over screen was wheeled out.. first time i saw a video recorder that was too, aaaarrghh.. lol.
Whale oil beef hooked! I remember watching this in year 6 when we studied ww2. We had a day not long after when we all dressed in 1940s clothes and pretended we were living in that era. As far as I know kids aren't taught history like that anymore.
