New wildfire rages: Little Bald Mountain aflame

Posted: 7:56 AM- Firefighters are dealing with a new blaze in Tooele County today - just one day after crews contained Salt Lake City's City Creek Canyon fire and Provo's Bridal Veil Falls fire. Kathy Jo Pollock said the new fire is burning heavy timber areas atop Little Bald Mountain, in the Stansbury Mountains. It has reached more than 20 acres since lightning struck and initiated the flames yesterday. Pollock said there are 10 smoke jumpers working the fire, and two hand crews are preparing to join them. There are also two helicopters helping to fight the new blaze. "It has been creeping down the hill, torching some of the trees in the area," Pollock said Friday morning. "It's not moving very fast." However, some winds swept through late last night and pushed the flames downhill and to the west, Pollock said. Crews have closed South Willow Canyon and five campgrounds there. But the blaze is "quite a ways up the canyon where the road dead ends," Pollock said, so the first camp site in the canyon, called Intake, remains open. There are several homes at the mouth of the canyon, but Pollock said they are a couple miles from the fire. "The threat right now is to forest service campgrounds in the area," Pollock said. "The residences are further down the hill. We're not sure how many

are there, but it's a minimal threat." Firefighters are working this morning to determine how many crews and resources are needed to battle the blaze.
