Warfare has always fascinated folk, both those who have and those who have not experienced it. So a deluge of war comics appeared during and following World War II, featuring fighting men and sundry war heroes. We've already looked at Sgt. Rock and his Easy Company. Now let us consider Sgt. Nick Fury and all the other combat comics and combat heroes. Fury and his U.S. Ranger detachment, the Howling Commandos, were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963. Later, Fury would become the leader of Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. superspies. Combat Kelly and Captain Savage also had their comic runs at warfare. Combat comics remained popular through the '70s and into the '80s, and this video will show a representative sample of the most popular war books from Marvel, DC, and Charlton Comics.

  • Wow! You're a lucky person! I envy you!

  • Nifty collection of comic images. I used to collect pre-1980's war comic titles and have several of those you've posted. Thanks for posting them.

  • I envy you. That's a worthy collection!

    Cheers, John

  • And his Howling Commandos!!!!!

  • Yes, Stan Lee once said they got that name from the "Screaming Eagles." But the "others" refers to all the other comic heros, guys like Captain Savage and Sgt. Stryker. Love 'em all.

  • @modean5564 Yeah I know, man. Making Nick Fury black would be like if they made Gabriel Jones white. Or making Dum Dum short and scrawny.

And Iron Man's been around a LOT longer than since the war in Afghanistan. Marvel movies just need to stop being crap.

  • Johann's Tiger! I read that! It was a badass story about a German tank commander with a guilty conscience trying to keep his men from getting killed by the Russians and the SS Field Police. Garth Ennis is one of the best writers of war comics ever - I LOVED 303.

I also recently acquired the full run of Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. It's enough to take a guy back to his childhood. We didn't play soldier - we played COMMANDO.

  • @modean5564

And...and...the Unknown Soldier. What if his character is in a movie, he gets plastic surgery and HE turns out to be black? The horror! The horror!

  • @modean5564

And Enemy Ace! What if they make a movie about him and he loses his self-doubt and starts ENJOYING HIS WORK?!?

  • @modean5564

Then they'll toss Kid Colt in a movie and put a BLACK hat on his head!!! Aieeeee!

  • @modean5564

Next thing you know they'll do a movie about the Viking Commando and they'll make him BLACK?!?

  • @modean5564

Next thing you know they'll put Gravedigger (Cpt. Ulysses Hazard) in a movie and he'll be WHITE!!

  • And I bet he's a WHITE man in each and every one, as he ought to be!!

  • I just can't believe that after all these years of our beloved sgt. being a WHITE man, he some how became a BLACK man in the movie Iron Man 2. If I had known that beforehand, I would never gone to the movie. That shit ain't right!!!!
