that was caused from the chambers of the pistol not being sealed off properly. Each chamber must be sealed or else all chambers will fire at the same time resulting in what you saw happen there. If that had live ammunition in the gun it could result in losing fingers and possibly death. That is something every civil war soldier had to deal with on a daily basis.
As a re-enactor myself (in the UK) yes safety is always an issue BUT I did find this rather amusing!! the union cavalryman who goes to attack a soldier then realises its one of his own, the sabres that dont get anywhere near eachother (I know they dont want 2 damage their precious sabres but a few nicks out of them put some character into them) and the union just sitting and looking at the confederates that are stood just feet away firing at them!!!! lol
I would like to encourage the person who made this video to become involved with a civil war era living history unit and find out how much training is involved in doing a cav. and or soldier impression:)
I'm well aware that the person who made this video meant no offense there is none taken on my part:). Let me assure you that the Gettysburg staff spends two years planning this national event and safety for the reenactors and guests is of the highest priority to their staff.
Furthermore, many of the reenactors who do these events and who work with weapons spend many, many, hours training and have to attend safety courses in order to be able to participate at reenactments and to ensure everyone's safety-the reenacting community takes safety very, very, seriously. To a person who has never been on a civil war battlefield or worked with a civil war weapon the sword fight might appear commical but not to an experienced reenactor like myself..
As a reenactor who has portrayed both a soldier, who currently portrays a civil war battlefield nurse. It takes a skill to swing a sabre and not hit someone with it while making the swing and strike look effortless-which is the case with the reb in this video....
Can I use this in a video I'm making? I'll give you credit and send the link when I'm done!
