Kieran Hanrahan plays Irish Music on the Deering "Calico" Tenor Banjo at the Eagle Music Shop 2007 Deering Banjos Day. Kieran was Born in Ennis, County Clare. He is one of the all time great Irish Tenor Banjo players - playing in his own distinctive elegant style. He began playing traditional Irish music on the tenor banjo at the age of fourteen and had won the all Ireland banjo championship by the time he was eighteen. Over his respected career Kieran has helped to found and tour the world with a number of highly respected bands including Inchiquin, Stocktons Wing and the Templehouse Ceili Band. Kieran has hosted radio programmes for RTE since 1991. Currently he hosts Céilé' House a radio programme on traditional Irish music aired weekly in Ireland on RTE radio 1. In 1998 Kieran recorded his best selling solo album "Kieran Hanrahan plays the Irish Tenor banjo".
I studied for a week for Kieran Harahan at Gaelic Roots in Boston. One thing you can be sure of, if he says the Deering Calico is good then that's just what he means. Back then, he took my banjo and played it for a minute. He handed it back and said, "No. Not the tone for me." He knows what he likes.
