Dick Dale... invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.

  • Dick dale was honored last Wednesday in the Orange County Hall Of Fame.

He was the creator of "Surf Music" and a native son of Orange County.

Leo Fender , creator of the Fender guitar was also a native of Orange County.

He is buried in Santa Ana, and his grave stone is a Fender guitar.

  • @Cyberella1000 ...yes and googled him...Dick is 73 and still alive

  • Gorgeous!!!

Dick Dale is one of the most accomplished guitarists, and most accomplished Strat players, in the history of electric guitar.

The Strat was invented in 1954, so Dick Dale was way ahead of the pack.

And, dig his take on a country/western standard.

    And, he's another brilliant leftie!

    He's fabulous.

  • I love you knowledge of music

  • I like the Duane Eddy version best of GR best. So who came firstt "The 'Chicken or the Egg'?

    Eddy or Dale.

what's wrong with putting a few facts out about a video.

Most people have no idea who they are anyways.

BTW I sent dick dale a email a few months back and he

replied to me the very same day. I thought that was informative and very nice of him.

  • @donken2006

Yep used to go to the Playboy there in Garden Grove to see him play.

  • Respond to this video... Dale is awesome. Love to be in that crazy band!

  • @patokaman YEs he just played Fullerton College....Sept

  • I don't need a ten minute history lesson before the song!! Video description should read: One Full Minute of Silence followed by the shreddings of Dick Dale. Thanks but I'm gonna watch Burl Ives version now.

  • I'd like Dale on guitar and Frank Black on vocals please

  • ATTENTION: YOUTUBE MY BOY T2 GHETTO HIPPIE'S "In The Sun"

  • back in late 60's early 70's we went to see dick dale show at the playgirl.

It was a huge bar with lots of dancers. the highlight seem to be the HAWAIINAN

DANCERS OR tahitian dancE SHOW. AT THAT TIME HE HAD A NEW WIFE.

  • Dick Dale must have been the earlier version Tony Iommi. Beyond brillant.

  • I saw Dick Dale I think in 93 at the Santa Monica Pier for the first time and he put on a killer show and I've been converted since then. Have all his records and truly appreciate his style of guitar player.
