@coolrog7564 yeah, the producers didn't have much of a choice unfortunately. It was either that or lose a lot of money. While indeed The Exorcist obviously does not own exorcism at all (which has been present in some of the first horror films ever), many people feel that HoE hardly attempted to deviate from the pea soup and profanity they already saw. In fact, I believe they were more interested in the scenes from Lisa and the Devil. It was still a good effort albeit unsuccessful.

@jackscal1 elke sommer did it as a favor to the producer. i think i wrote a pretty fair review of both films on imdb under the username coolrog. i put some plot interpretations i didn't see in other reviews concerning lisa and the devil that i think clear up some questions people have.

@rulesofac the difference is that the projects original intent was not a cash in. it was only after problems arose as you described that avenue was taken out of desperation. just because someone creaes a successful film and repopularises a certain genre, theme or character doesnt mean they now own it. cash ins are good for everyone so i don't know why their bashed. producers make money and consumers have more choices to choose from so everybody benefits.

@coolrog7564 House of Exorcism WAS actually intended to cash in on the success of The Exorcist because they couldn't find a distributor who would buy the original movie Lisa and the Devil. It's got nothing to do with borrowing thematically.

@matheusmarchetti Lisa and the Devil was a film of style over substance, the opening titles, theme music and set pieces really are of great style, but what the hell was it all about!!! but when i saw this revised version with these totally stupid Exorcist rip-off scenes it made even less sense and trashed everything stylish the uncut version had! if you want a great ecorcist italian rip-off try The Tempter, here Elke Somers must have been really hard up!! Carry on Behind was a step up from this!

I am so sick of hearing how somebody cashed in on or ripped off another film. there is no story in existence that has not borrowed thematically from classic literature which now just leaves us with the variation of details which makes it seem like an original idea. I guess nobody can ever make another vampire or zombie film because after all they're just cashing in on nosferatu or notld. you either like a movie or you don't but there is nothing wrong with riding a wave it would be stupid not to.
There's a scene with her and the priest where she says one of the funniest lines in movie history. When the priest asks her "Where do you come from? Where do you come from?" She answers: From a cunt, you jerk!"

Watch the original uncut version "Lisa and the Devil" - it´s a masterpiece. They shot this additional 20 minutes of godawful exorcism/possession scenes for the US market to cash in with the sucsses of "The Exorcist".
