A planetary gearset would have somewhat less efficiency than a set of spur gears because the planetary gearset has more friction -- more rotating parts, more bearings, more teeth meshing against each other. That said, the planetary gearset has more teeth in mesh than a set of spur gears so the gears can be smaller -- which would tend to reduce friction. So in the end it's pretty much a wash.
