  • And by the way, you could throw a bunch of nails and ball bearings into the tranny and not hurt these synchros. You'll replace the entire car around you before you'll have to replace anything in the tranny. I've never hurt one in over 75K of track miles.

    You can do what you want, but if that's your only reason for double clutching, it is definitely a waste of time. In modern cars, it is a waste of time and energy to do that.

  • Because the brake pedal goes down too far for me under very hard braking...unless the pads and rotors are absolutely new. It is better to mod the gas pedal, but I need the brake to be about .5 inch higher, and it's also a bit wider to accomodate my narrow feet. I killed 2 birds with 1 stone.

  • "here it is again at speed" = sitting stillin the parking lot? :-P, no I get it, the speed you normally go through the motions when actually shifting. good video, but hard to see your feet. would love to see them better, but i think i get it, you're moreso rolling the foot over rather than angling your foot to catch the throttle with your heel while braking with your toes

  • Watch about the last minute of the video. I put a flashlight in the floorboard and also removed the bulky suit which was blocking the view. You can definitely see it better in the last part of the vid. Thanks!

  • Different cars brands have different opinions on heel-toe/whatever techniques. Some brands don't care less, and place the pedals really bad for such techniques (on purpose). Other brands put them, on purpose, nicely placed. It's not the position when pedals are unused, but rather the position of a pressed brake, compared with an unpressed gas pedal.

  • AHHH! Why did you modify the BRAKE pedal (the one that requires a LOT of force to go through it) rather than simply modifying the throttle pedal?!?! (the one that doesn't ever withstand much force at all)

    To anyone watching this, it is WAY SAFER to modify your throttle pedal rather than your brake pedal. If you have already modified your brake pedal, make sure you have NOT compromised the integrity of the pedal itself. If that pedal brakes, you are going to crash HARD! Be CAREFUL!

  • I disagree. I always double-clutch on downshifts. It is only marginally slower than single clutching, but it is FAR easier on your synchros. Despite it being marginally slower, it doesn't matter, since you would be threshold braking in both instances anyway. When I instruct some students, sometimes it helps them learn how to heel-and-toe since it helps with the rhythm. As for clutch wear, the negligible increase in wear would be more than offset by the decrease in synchro wear.

  • Oh absolutely. To finish first, you must first finish! Reliability will always be a big part in racing. When you wear the car out (or yourself), there's a greater chance to break. There are guys out there that always try to drive at 10/10ths...and you might be fast for a lap or two...but normally not the whole race. Drive hard, but conserve yourself, the car, the brakes, etc and you'll be there at the end! I just won the ARRC (@ Road Atlanta) in my underdog Vette doing exactly that!
