I found this Dutch record at a flea market yesterday and was intrigued when I saw it.... I know the song "Schön, dass du wieder bei mir bist" (Lit."It's great having you by my side again") which was recorded by Kurt Widmann, Willy Berking and Adolf Steimel to name a few.... However I had never heard a version by the "M.A.U.I Eilanders" (Maui Islanders) - a band specializing in Hawaiian music and wasn't sure what it would sound like (not knowing any Hawaiian music except "Aloha he")...
It turns out this is an interesting part of wartime music history in the Netherlands. From 1942 the ban on jazz music in the Netherlands became stricter (English sounding band names and songs of Anglo-Saxon origin were banned as well). Hawaiian jazz offered an acceptable alternative - however illogical this may sound - and became very popular. Listening to the record I can understand why : it's hot and the influence of Django Reinhardt is quite obvious....
This recording was made in Hilversum in the spring of 1942.
Musicians :
Jan Mol at the guitar
Han de Willigan, Hawaii guitar
Coen van Nassau, Vibraphone
Rudy Mol,
Jan van Staay
The video features images from Holland from the first years of the Occupation as well as beaches prepared for a possible allied invasion.

Record very worn out
This record was transferred with a 78rpm phono preamp and Ortofon Om78 cartridge and stylus in order to get an acceptable 78rpm playback. The restoration was done as truthfully as possible
Excellent *****5. Merci.

Intéressant comme histoire! Je savais que la musique hawaïenne avait été à la mode partout en Europe au début des années 1920; mais c'est plus étonnant de la retrouver en Hollande en 1942!
Merci pour la découverte.
