Here is a parody video from In Living Color of Paula Abdul's song "Promise of a New Day". Poked fun at the fact that the real video is stretched vertically. As far as I know, this video has been removed from future broadcasts of the show, and does not appear on the DVD sets.

Sorry in advance for the low volume.

Lyrics:
My thighs are spreading
and my butt is real wide
Can't disguise it
Got nowhere to hide

How can I look skinny?
Promise of a thin me
(Promise) Promise of a thin me

They've stretched my body
and they've shrunken my hips
They do this to Wilson Phillips

How do I look skinny?
Promise of a thin me
(Promise) Promise of a thin me

My voice is bad
and my singing's a joke
Still make millions
off of Diet Coke

How do I sing on key?
Other's do it with me
I give them a large fee

I cheered the Lakers
and taught Janet to dance
Then got into
Arsenio's pants

I'm on MTV
Connections didn't hurt me
(Promise) Promise of a rich me
(Promise) Promise of a thin me...

  • Paula Abdul wasn't even fat in this video. I don't get it.

  • @cnote4461 no, it's because the real video for this song had a bunch of weird camera effects to digitally slim everyone involved. i actually haven't seen this in 20 years -- i just googled "promise of a thin me" and found it right away. guess good parodies never leave your brain!

  • @missjanet88 I'll agree J Lo has great dance moves, but you can thank autotune for her singing voice. Plus most of her music is filler. For example, she did a bad cover of Carly Simon's "You Belong to Me." Anita Baker's version is arguably the best. Unlike J Lo, Anita is known for her soothing, velvety voice as well as her timeless 40+ hit contributions to the music world. Recording albums of nothing but bland, uninspired, generic pop tunes does not a diva make. Anita is a diva, J Lo is not.

  • when this video actually came out - paula had picked up some wieght for a minute - ...and she did get a little "wide" in the hips....thats where this parody came from.

  • @ScienceProjek I think you had to be at least @ 16 or so in 1990 to 'get it'

  • LOL its great =)

  • @btchnotme Oh, I didnt know that, I just remember seeing something on tv about her when I was like 7 or 8 about her eating disorder. So I just put the two together when I saw the rerun of this when I was 13. My bad.

  • @kevness2112 Actually her eating disorder started when she was a teenager in ballet dance class. By the time this parody came out she was 29 or 30 so I was say no, this did not lead to her disorder. Probably didn't help but it did not start it.

  • @ladigirl Paula was huge from about 1989 to 1992, she was right up there with Janet, Madonna, Whitney and all the other folks from yesteryear.
