works on any iphone model. here i'm using my new 3G S. I'm using iTunes 9.2
Basic Quick Explanation on How to Do This:
1) Take your mp3 file, put it in audacity or whatever you use to cut mp3 files
2) Render/Export your 30 second or less ringtone clip
3) Open the new mp3 you just rendered in itunes.
4) Right click the song in itunes and click on "Convert to AAC Format"
5) Go to My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Name of Artist of Song You Converted/Name of Album
6) Once you're located the new .m4a file iTunes created, rename it from song.m4a to song.m4r (you dont need to name it "song" i just used it as an example)
7) Copy the new .m4r file to My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Ringtones
8) Open the .m4r in iTunes, then sync your iPhone.
you will get errors from now on saying your iPhone cannot sync because of an error, but just ignore that, it syncs fine, it's just confused by the non-itunes-store-bought ringtones.
Bugs: DO NOT name a song that has ('s and have a letter next to the first (
Example:
Song (Remix) = Good
Song(Remix) = Bad. Will not sync with phone.
Link to download Audacity: http://audacity.download-latest.com/
Download MP3 Codec for Audacity (NECCESSARY) : http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
When exporting an MP3 using Audacity, it'll ask you to direct it to the MP3 LAME codec i just linked you. Install the codec to C:/Program Files then when audacity asks you for lame_enc.dll, you direct audacity to the folder named "Lame for Audacity" that you just installed to your program files folder.

@honkeychicken
I just tried it and I can't do it because there is NOT a "tone" or "ringtone" option on the iTunes.

I own a mac too, and all you need to do is either have an .m4a or a .mp3 and you just put it into GarageBand (preferably a new project) and press the little cycle button next to the play button. A yellow band will appear at the top, and all you have to do is drag it to your preferred length and section. Once you have that done, click share, and send it to iTunes as a Ringtone and you're all done. I can't really help you if the song is a .mp4. If it is, I guess you're out of luck. :)

i own a Mac and followed your directions up to the part with your software. I downloaded the Free Ringtone Maker in the Mac App Store instead. All of my music in my itunes automatically synced so i could pick any song from my list and make the ringtone from that. it saves it to itunes automatically and once i moved the ringtones to my iphone and synced my iphone 4s to my itunes, they were all there. very easy! :)
