The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.


Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

L'arte di perdere non è difficile da imparare;
così tante cose sembrano fatte apposta
per essere perdute, ma la loro perdita non è un disastro.

Si perde qualcosa ogni giorno. Accetta l'agitazione
per aver perso le chiavi del tuo portone,
di un'ora impiegata in modo sbagliato.
L'arte di perdere non è difficile da imparare.

Poi prova a perdere ancora, sempre di più:
luoghi e nomi, e dove saresti voluto andare.
Nessuna di queste ti porterà al disastro.

Ho perso l'orologio di mia madre. E guarda!
L'ultima o la penultima di tre belle case.
L'arte di perdere non è difficile da imparare.

Ho perso due belle città. E, ancora più grandi,
alcuni regni di mia proprietà, due fiumi, un continente.
mi mancano, ma non è un disastro.


Anche perdere te (la voce allegra, un gesto
che amo). Non m'inganno. E' evidente che
l'arte di perdere non è così difficile da imparare
anche se può sembrare molto simile (scrivilo!) ad un disastro.
