CBS' 1982 contract with the NCAA stipulated that CBS had to broadcast a regular season game of the week. But NBC still had contracts with all of the major conferences. That's why CBS hired Billy Packer. Packer was able to put together a schedule of regular season Saturday games despite NBC holding the rights to the Big 10, Pac 10, SEC, etc.

I used to love the NBC college basketball theme used in the late 1970s. It was highlighted in the '79 Bird vs. Magic NCAA Championship Game. Does anyone have this?

This theme was also used as the theme for the bowl games NBC used to have from 85 to 89
