Rebecca and I dance the Red Rose Saunter at the TAC Summer School Ceilidh, July 31, 2009. Alex and Ruth Jappy, our mentors and teachers in Old Time Dance, suggested this dance to us and prepared us for the demonstration. Unlike the Viennese waltz which is 'traditional", the Red Rose Saunter was written by Steven & Diane Shaw and published in 1991.

Saunters are Old Time versions of the Foxtrot. Despite working on this dance for some time, I found the footwork difficult to get into my mind, and missed one step in the first sequence during our dem. There is a complexity in the rhythm, not always quick-quick-slow. For example, the opening sequence is slow-slow, quick-quick-quick-quick, quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow. Fun to do if you can get it right. Wonderful to have coaching from Alex and Ruth on the fine points of the style.
