"Dogma Be Damned"

Silent interlocutor,
in whose name we speak
give us the courage to speak
despite your lack of response

forgoing all dogma,
but feeling so clearly the mystery engulfing us,
the mystery that we too are,
I know that I am not alone

There is no aloneness

To speak is to dwell
in the love of the unknown other
a love beyond many generations

Give us strength mysterious ground
Help us come to terms
with your eternal silence
Let our duty be
to faithfully speak your will

Dogma be Damned
I need no false miracles

Life itself is enough

No virgin births,
No afterlife,
No ultimate recompense

No figure in the sky,
No doer of deeds,
No granter of mercy
And, no grand adjudicator

I need nothing more,
Than what I already have,

Life itself

Life is the miracle,
And the miracle is us
Trees, rain, and wind
Sun, moon, and sky
These are our sacred texts,

Let us regain the ancient literacy
Help us read the words
Inscribed all around us

Harmony and order,
Growth and change,
Variety, variety, variety.

The mystery is all around us
And we too are the mystery
For we remain mysterious
to ourselves

Oh silent interlocutor
The relation of our self-relation,
You are the only conscience
The world can have
Help me faithfully speak
To the whole of who I am.

May my prayers
Of gratitude and forgiveness
My prayers for strength and courage
Be neither heard nor responded to
May they be instead resonant
With the sacred majesty
Of the self-aware cosmos

Earth you are my Mother
I am your offspring
And your care-taker
Help me to remember
Who I really am.

  • Nice poem , thanks for sharing.

  • Poetry blurring the distinction w/ prayer; I like how your poem questions that boundary. I also enjoyed the chant like "No___________ " succession. It picked up the tempo of your poem midstream and gave it a creedal quality. Well done.
