This original song I wrote for the black Irish Band album, "Hear the lonesome Whistle Blow". On the album I wrote about eight songs. Utah was based more on the modern side of railroading, and the lonesome life of long hours waiting. At it's core the song is a love story of a railroad engineer and his love waiting in Salt Lake City Utah.

The oil paintings of the steam locomotives were done over many years. When I was eight years old I painted my first train painting. Steam locomotives our my favorites as you can tell. Being fair, you can see that I like the old Southern Pacific Railroad. Remember they are paintings, not photos, so I like to create a mood and an interesting composition. My artwork is at www.trainfire.com The music is on the bands web site www.blackirish.com

  • You are influenced by Richard Estes, isn't it!? At least your technics are as good as his paintings.

  • Thanks. I started at age 8 and never had a lesson in my life... I've painted over 500 train paintings. Growing up looking at lighting and color helps one grow into a better artist.

  • From what my grandpa told me stories about working on the PRR before WW2 and after he served in the army. I wish I was born back in the 20's and lived up through the 30's, 40's and 50's. The world was not perfect back then tough, but things were simpler. Life was not as confusing as today. It took a harder work, but really hard work is a good thing. Working on the railroad was hard work back then, and I wish I was a part of it.

  • This is really good sond, and the oil paintings are fantastic of these trains.

  • Being retired from Railroad work after 35 years on the rails I love the art work of the old trains ! Thanks for posting !

  • As a railroad artist also, I love what you have done with the 4449! You have captured it to the tee! I got to see it in Michigan during the train fest for the first and only time of my life, I have to paint her also!!! God has blessed you with an amazing talent, thank you for sharing your paintings, very impressed! Dean H.

  • You are one amazing talented man!

  • The song is great but the art is incredible.

Reminds me of the old railroad calendars from the late '40s and early '50s. Thanks for helping preserve a rich part of our history.
