Phil combines a great, full sound with a strong swinging time-feel. His bebop ideas sound right, and he knows when to put them into high gear with his impressive technique.

    Nice post!

Nah, every alto player should strive to sound like themselves, and make sure they sound good in their own way.

@Graham Lyons.i hope your speaking with knowledge because these look to be very young players and maybe the same goes for the conductor ha ha .as a pro bassist in the early 50s 60s 70s i had a bash a couple of times with an amateur symphony orch and i never had time to lift my head to look at the conductor too busy reading the dots l.o.l. [not my strongest asset] phil woods has to be one the GREATS on alto.many thanks.

This is average, low-quality jazz. My ear is a little too refined for this shit.

    It hardly changes. It's a continuous flat-line.

None taken - but this is probably more reflective of your under-developed ear than a warranted description of this. However, if Phil Woods was playing in an elevator, I'd just ride it all day!!! But go and transcribe some of his lines, check what he's doing against the chords then you'll be on your way to honing your ear in.
