On August 16, 2011 my girlfriend and i took a day trip on a Delta Airlines DC-9-51 with tail number N777NC built in 1979. Flight #1536 from DTW to BWI around 10:15am.

This video contains a little taxi, followed by takeoff, with a brief view of the cabin.

Purpose was solely to fly on the DC-9 which might not be around for much longer! I live in RI, so we flew PVD-DTW-BWI and BWI-DTW-PVD. It only cost $59 each way per person which wasn't that bad. First leg was on a CRJ-200, second and third were on the DC-9, and the last leg back home was with an A319. I have to say the DC-9 was my favorite!

Enjoy!

  • I flew on a DC-9 for Northwest for the first time in 1995 from Detroit to Columbus Ohio. The Flight was 35 minutes. I sat in the Back by the left engine. That is the best place to sit on any rear engined Aircraft

  • @wdwron08 ah definitely! I love the experience of being in the back close to the engines. It makes the "experience" more thrilling. Newer planes are so boring to fly on, since there seems to be such a disconnect between passenger and plane.

  • I just got back from a trip on Delta (wonderful, wonderful experience), but was sad that this was the first time in awhile on them I didn't get a DC-9. The MD-88 just isn't the same...

  • @mezzanoitaliano yeahh, i've never been on an MD88 but i don't think it would be the same either. The engines have a similar name but the "sound" it totally different.

  • @mezzanoitaliano But its still a great tone, i enjoy the 717 and the CRJ noise also.

  • @Tomk916 I'm actually flying on the 717 this March with AirTran (it'll be my first time). It'll be interesting to see how much it "feels" like the DC9. I'd imagine not very as the engine tone makes or breaks enjoyment of a flight for me. NO other engine in my opinion produces a tone as beautiful as the JT8D on the 727, DC9, 737-100/200...

  • @cduluk You wil enjoy it, I'm sure you will :) I've always enjoyed the engine tone on the 717

  • @cduluk I agree But flying on the 737-700 and sitting in fromt of the engine was quite the Rush

  • @dave4shmups oh yes, the DC9 cabin is MUCH bigger than that of the CRJ. I was on a CRJ-200 prior to this leg of our trip and it was very cramped in comparison. The DC9 cabin is a little smaller than that of a 737 or an A319/320 but not claustrophobic. Also, the DC9 cabin setup has 2 seats on the left side and 3 on the right. So if you're on the left side it's a lot more open.

  • Awesome job!! I've seen photos of the DC-9's cabin, and it does look a lot wider then the cabin on a CRJ.
