Inova Life with Cancer® -- Shannon's Story

When Shannon's husband, David, was diagnosed with cancer, their "world stopped." She found Life with Cancer®, part of Inova Health System's Cancer Services program, which helped her and her two sons deal with the many difficulties involved in caring for their father and caring for themselves.

These support services are just some of the many community benefits offered at the program's Dewberry Family Center, a 16,000-square-foot facility dedicated to education, outreach and support of cancer patients, survivors and family members throughout the region, at no additional cost, regardless of where patients are treated for their disease.

The only health system-affiliated resource center of its kind in Northern Virginia, the house offers a medical library focusing on cancer, eight private and group counseling rooms, children's and adult art-therapy studios, a large exercise room for classes specifically designed for cancer patients, and a "reflection garden" to help patients and family members with coping and comfort. The Center was funded by generous philanthropic donations from patients, their loved ones and community members.
