"Is there any way we can get some food?" I asked as my stomach growled loudly.
"You haven't eaten yet?"
"No, I was rushed out of my house. All I had was coffee, so now I'm wide awake and hungry."
He leaned forward and looked at the clock that sat between us on the nightstand. "It's after 10, so the hotel's probably not giving out the complementary breakfast anymore. But, I can go get you something..."
He dug in his pocket and took out his wallet. "What do you want?"
I shook my head. "Oh no, you're not spending your money on me." I reached into my purse and took out my own wallet and handed him a twenty.
He reluctantly took it. "Fine, but dinner's on me, since I'll be eating, too."
"Deal."
He stood up and grabbed the keys out of his other pocket. "Don't go anywhere."
"Where am I gonna go, you have the keys..."
"I know, but don't wander. Just stay in the room, please."
"Kay..."
"What do you want?"
"I don't care, just get me French fries."
He smiled. "I'll be back soon." Then, he was out the door.
I grabbed the remote and flipped through the channels, figuring out which ones were which. I settled myself into a Criminal Minds marathon. I laid back and got about 15 minutes into the episode I was watching, when Midnight started rubbing her face against my foot.
I sat up again. "What?"
She pawed my leg, looked around, then pawed again. It took me a minute, but I finally realized what she was looking for. Her litter box. Crap. I had thought about bringing it, but what do I look like carrying a litter box around with me, I mean, I wasn't going to put it in my suitcase. If I was quick, Taylor wouldn't ever know I had left. So, I put Midnight in my purse, grabbed the extra key card, and walked into the hall. I decided to take the stairs and avoid people who would be wondering why my purse was meowing.
"Hang on girl, we're almost outside."
I hurried down the stairs, noting the markers. Level 5, level 4, 3, 2, and finally one. I went out the side door and ended up behind the hotel. I took Midnight out of my purse and set her on the ground. She didn't move. She stayed put, right next to my feet.
I rolled my eyes. "Now, is not the time to be modest. Just go use the bathroom."
She was a statue. I sighed and took a step forward, she followed. This gave me an idea. I walked around the employee parking lot, Midnight on my heels, and found a little grassy spot. I sat and she sat, too. I lifted her little bottom so she was standing again.
"Go pee or whatever you have to do."
She sniffed and did everything but use the bathroom. I looked at my watch. We'd been outside for almost 15 minutes, which meant Taylor had been gone for 30 and would be back soon. I looked up again and she was squatting. FINALLY. She finished her business; I picked her up and started for the door. I didn't bother putting her in my purse. I just used the key to get back in and ran up the steps two at a time. I burst through the stairwell door, sweaty and hoping Taylor wasn't back yet.
I swiped the card again, and walked cautiously inside. I didn't see him. I let the door shut behind me and walked further into the room. I thought I was safe, until I saw the McDonald's bag on the counter. He was definitely back and he wasn't here because he was probably looking for me. I set Midnight down and went to sit on my bed. My phone was blinking. I had a missed call from 'Detective Lautner.' Time to face the music, I guess. I called him back. He picked up on the first ring.
"Where were you?!" He practically yelled at me.
"I'm in the room right now, so I'll tell you when you get back."
He hung up and a few minutes later, walked in the door. He was pissed.
"Well?"
I sighed. "I just took Midnight out to use the bathroom. I thought she would be done before you got back, which is why I didn't take my phone."
He kept glaring at me. "Where did you take her?"
"Behind the hotel, in the employee parking lot."
He rubbed his forehead. "That was still risky. I'll just take her out from now on. Kay?"
I nodded.
"And I don't care what the reason is, don't leave this room again without me knowing."
"Yes, tyrant. God, I can't even take my damn cat out to piss without a security clearance."
He looked at me incredulously. "Do you want to die? Because at the rate you're going, you're gonna end up in a pine box next your brother."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Don't. You. Dare, talk about my brother like that."
He looked down, sighed, and looked up at me again. His expression was softer. "I'm sorry, Rena." He walked towards me and put his arms around me. "You scared me, and I'm an ass when I'm scared."
"Yes, you are." I mumbled against his chest.
He pressed his lips to my forehead and let his arms fall to my waist. "Eat, your food's getting cold."
