CHAN:
The persecution of Falun Gong in China drives many of the spiritual group's adherents to leave the country in search of a more hospitable environment. One such Falun Gong practitioner recently arrived in Israel, requesting asylum. He tells our Israeli correspondents about the Chinese Communist Party's methods of torture.
[Mr. Lin, Falun Gong Practitioner]:
"In Shanghai the Communist Party secretly arrested Falun Gong practitioners to brainwash them. A few of my colleagues got these treatments. Some of them disappeared for a few days. It was called "studying." They were beaten up there, but you can't see the injuries. For example, they put a book on your body and hit it through the book. So the inner organs got injured, but from the outside you don't see anything."
But Mr. Lin still hasn't completely escaped. The Israeli authorities consider Mr. Lin an illegal immigrant and are now detaining him in jail. His fate now rests in the hands of Israeli authorities and the United Nations Refugee Agency, which have the power to grant him temporary refugee status. We'll keep you updated as Lin's situation progresses.
