When visiting Egypt, the cafe culture is huge there, and there are many choices of how you can take your drinks, tea, coffee, juices, and sodas. Below are words and phrases that will help you make the perfect choice when ordering beverages in Egypt. Seriously, if you don't order it correctly, you wont be satisfied, so pay close attention to what you say and impress the waiter with your Egyptian Arabic skills. Also at the end I will discuss buying coffee to bring home, and the useful words in trying to buy ground coffee.
Coffee Shop or Café - 'ahwa - قهوة| Plural - 'ahaawi - قهاوي
At the Café...
Turkish coffee deserves it own section because it is extremely complex so we will begin with this:
Turkish Coffee - 'ahwa turki - قهوة توركي
Turkish Coffee with...
...no sugar - 'ahwa saada - قهوة سادة
...little sugar - 'ahwa 3a r riiHa - قهوة عالريحة
...some sugar - 'ahwa mazbuuT - قهوة مظبوط
...just over some - 'ahwa maano - قهوة مانو
...extra sugar - 'ahwa ziyaada - قهوة زيادة
...way too much - 'ahwa caramel - قهوة كرمل
Tea - shaay - شاي
Tea comes in two forms in Egypt, in a tea bag form that I was familiar with , as well as a powder form, so be careful not to eat the grounds at the bottom if you order this.
Tea bag - fitla - فتلة
(order this specifically by saying) - ana 3aayiz shaay bi fitla - انا عايز شاي بفتلة
Powder tea - shaay naa3im - شاي ناعم
(to be safe with the amount of sugar in your tea, be sure to ask for the sugar on the side)
انا عايز السكر برا
ana 3aayiz as sukr barra
(I want the sugar outside)
OR
انا عايز السكر على جمب
ana 3aayiz as sukr 3ala gamb
(I want the sugar on the side)
Juice(s) - 3aSiir/3aSaayir - عصير | عصائر
Soda - Haaga Sa'3a - حاجة سقعة
(lit. something cold)
Straw - shalamoo/shafaaTa - شلمو| شفاطة
(don't mix this up with the word "shaTaafa - شطافة " which is the thing that shoots water that cleans your butt in the toilet)
Ice - talg - تلج
when you do find a place that has ice, they will be extremely frugal with it, you have to convince them to give you more my really emphasizing this point. If you dont they will give you just one or two small pieces. This is my own experience, actual experience may vary.
Ice Cubes - you can just say "talg" to convey this meaning
Crushed Ice - talg magruush - تلج مجروش
this is where it gets difficult and results will change time from time
At the Coffee Shop to buy ground coffee...
Stove Top espresso machine - kafitira - كفترة
Turkish coffee maker - kanaka - كنكة
Raw coffee - bunn Habb - بن حب
Course-ground - maTHuun faransaawi - مطحون فرساوي
Fine-ground - maTHuun turki | naa3im -مطحون توكي | ناعم
Roasted/Unground - miHammaS | mish maTHuun | Habbaat - محمص |مش مطحون | حبات
Thats so nice of u to convey our culture to the world , thaaaaaanks
