Walter Ashe died a couple of years later. He was one of the few people left, maybe the only one who had served at one time in the Asheville which was lost in battle with all hands. A similar fate happened to USS Pillsubury ad USS Edsall. The entire Asiatic Fleet was destroyed by March 4, 1942 having fought almost continuously from December 7, 1941.
