Deficit means that you are down in your balance. Example. If I'm Mexico and my trade partner is Brazil. If I buy more to Brazil that what I sell to Brazil that means I expend more than what I earn.

a deficit is where you don't have enough money to cover all your expenses in which you try to cover by borrowing or in the US case printing more money
