London attorney Mark Stephens, says efforts to obtain federal "shield law"
protection for U.S.-based journalists may have a better chance of success
if supporters abandon trying to get a law through the Congress.
Stephens, of the law firm of Finers Stephens Innocent LLP, proposes that
the next U.S. journalist faced with prison time for refusing to reveal
sources should either appeal their case to the Inter-American Court of
Human Rights, or simply argue that international law supercedes U.S. law.
Stephens describes his approach in a five-minute discussion with Bill
Densmore of the Media Giraffe Project after his Oct. 30 appearance on a
panel at the Online News Association convention in Washington, D.C.
