Why are players practicing shooting at the same 5 holes on old shooter tutors when goalies have adopted a completely different style? The "butterfly and Hybrid".

This video shows a new scoring option for hockey players when shooting from the slot. The player is shooting on the new Score100goals shooter tutor which has new openings including over the shoulder which this video highlights. The colors correspond to different colors based on angles and distance to the net in the offensive zone. So the player is shooting at different areas on the net based on where he/she is releasing the puck in the offensive zone.(Their angle and distance to the net is taken into account.)

As the goalie drops down into his butterfly position he/she covers the bottom half of the net and carries the glovehand over the upper right hand corner. Because of this a player can shoot right over his shoulder. Or in other words right by his ear. Many NHL players have been shooting at this area for the past 15 years but unfortunately this isn't taught to young players. The trick is to obviously hit the net but also recondition your mind to stop shooting for that corner of the net and move your target to the middle about a foot and a half.

The slot is the best place to be in the offensive zone and greatest opportunity to score for the shooter.
The angle is to a players advantage vs a butterfly goalie and there's a number of areas to shoot at on the net. Great goal scorers will move horizontally through this area to get the goalies feet moving to open up the five hole. Also moving vertically in this area forces the goalie deeper in the net and takes away his angles.

This zone is where games are won and lost. Any time you get the puck, defensive players will be on you. A "quick release" is essential to get the shot off and catch the goalie out of position. Think wrist shot or snap shot.

  • As a goalie instructor I can attest that this scoring area is legit. It's probably the hardest glove save for most goalies to make. Do pay attention to goalies that hold their gloves in the 12 o'clock position. They will be far more likely to catch these than the traditional goalies.

  • @multipass613 Absolutely correct. On a disciplined goalie that holds his glove in this position it will be much harder to score there but with all of the action in a game and when a goalie gets tired this will cause his arm to drop too.

  • synthetic ice?

  • @birdisthewordism Yeah. It's called Kwik Ice made by a company out of Minnesota.

  • I can't tell you how many times I've seen Henrik Lundqvist get beat in that spot, it's becoming painful to watch. He's amazing everywhere else, but that one spot takes the cake.

  • @thegman1234 Ha. That guy is a wall. Many goalies have a problem there. Especially smaller and inexperienced tenders. Thanks for the comment.
