Actually, most of the women in old Hollywood were pure glamour. All hair and makeup. Of course, there were preferred looks and bone structure as a foundation. But ultimately, a great deal would be considered rather ordinary without the Hollywood Glam. There were exceptions, like Ava and Glynis, but to compare "women these days" to "women those days" is wholly unfair.

I love her version. This one has far too much vibrato.

Who says I would want to go back to the 50s? I did not live the decade but in talking with people who did, including my parents, things were better in many respects and not so great in others. However, one thing is sure -- a sense of self respect and a sense of decorum that seems to be totally lost today. Look around and tell me if this is not so for the most part. It cannot be denied because that is what the media feeds -- vulgar celebrity worship. Enough said.

God, I have no interest in going back to the way things were in 50's. Are you really sure you wish for that? Blech!

There is a video on YouTube of Ava singing this in her own voice - and it's way better, with more emotion and depth.

that's right, I had a cassette of the musical and it included Ava Gardner's recording. It was very good from what I remember, maybe a little forced to be more authentically "negro" in style. They could have included it in the movie and it wouldn't have done any harm.
