As a project under the National Arts Month Philippine International Arts Festival, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and The Performance Laboratory, Inc. in cooperation with University of St. La Salle and Teatrokon: West Visayas Theater Network present TANGHAL 5: National University Theater Festival on 15-19 February 2011 at University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City.
Tanghal is an annual theater festival for university-based theater groups in the Philippines. It is the flagship project of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-Executive Committee on Dramatic Arts for the National Arts Month celebration every February. The festival offers best performances of university theater companies all over the country, as truly showcasing the harvest of Philippine theater. Tanghal 5 is set to be a creative platform for college and university theater groups to meet and showcase their best works. It will be hosted by the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, under the management and direction of The Performance Laboratory, Inc. and in cooperation with Teatrokon: West Visayas Theater Network, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod and West Negros University.

Theme: "Dula ng Kabataan Tungo sa Mapagpalayang Edukasyon"
(Theater as a tool for engaging the youth on issues such as governance, environment, gender, history and heritage, globalization and cultural identity, and the Millennium Development Goals)

Events/Activities Featured in the Festival:
The festival is a curated event stretching over 5 days showcasing best performances by pre-selected university-based theater companies in the Philippines. The following are the festival components:
◘ FESTIVAL SHOWCASE: The National University Theater Festival intends to stage the best works from the university-based theaters coming from major regions of the country.
◘ INTERNATIONAL GUEST PERFORMANCE: In line with the celebration of the Philippine International Arts Festival, an international theater group will be invited to perform during the festival
◘ FRINGE PERFORMANCES: To attain a broader participation of university-based theater artists in Tanghal, performances from interested theater groups will be accommodated and staged as parallel activities for the Festival Showcases.
◘ WORKSHOPS: Experienced and respected theater practitioners will be invited to conduct workshops on specific areas in theater during the festival. Limited slots will be open to theater enthusiasts, teachers and students on a first come first serve basis.
◘ COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/OUTREACH: To bring the festival to a wider audience, Tanghal will have extension activities such as workshops and performances to selected communities outside of the main festival venues.
◘ INTERACTIVE FORUM: After each production, the audience and guests are encouraged to interact with the performing groups to discuss the aesthetic process, form and content of the performance.
◘ CONFERENCE / CONSULTATION: At the end of the festival, a conference among the delegates will be held to discuss the theater aesthetics as experienced in the performances during the festival as well as the concerns and directions of university theaters.
◘ EXHIBIT: An exhibit featuring the flagship projects of the Committee on Dramatic Arts highlighting the Tanghal: University Theater Festival in the past 4 years.
