Well in the story they followed Feanor, who was tainted by the evil of Morgoth. Different houses formed soon after, and in a sense that allegiance is like voting. But you see, in human society we do the same thing; learn that voting is good because we hate the opposition, or at least strongly disagree.

We would leave everyone else alone and only fight for freedom and liberty on a local scale, if it weren't for mass media tricking us into thinking voting and arguing is good.

Everyone always says that the public gets what they deserve. I suggest you read the Silmarillion. the elves were hard working people, and never had to deal with fear or hate. When these things infiltrated their society, they were unprepared because they were ironically living in utopia. So it goes for humans, that things must get bad so we know to prepare for the bad, and if things aren't bad then we are surprised when the bad comes.
