With its B-Movie conventions and a honking soundtrack, Dr Mark enjoyed the 'hysterical tone' of Shutter Island

  • I've never been a huge Scorsese fan, even if I respect his films, but I did enjoy this. It has B-Movie material, but it does not feel like one. Tarantino's practically are because they look and feel like B-Movies. But this did have some interesting cinematography. I thought it was a very intelligent popcorn thriller. The plot twist towards the end had me yelling "What the hell"...Oh, and the musical score WAS quite good as well.

  • Music..Bernard Hermann was hardly restrained either.

B-Movie..ambiguity by design or accident, it matters not in the end result.

Entertainment..theatricality is not against the law..look up 'fun'.

Scorcese..made something he may have enjoyed in a fifties nostalgia run.

Twist..is not a twist..the summation is that the character now does not want to live as a monster..thereby suggesting he recognizes the monster. Not a twist, inevitable.

  • @biggles1111 "through a filmmakers point of view" lol. good one.

If you watch most Scorsese movies closely (from Raging Bull onwards, certainly including Goodfellas) you'll find a great deal of continuity errors.

Scorsese adressed that in an interview once and justified it in some way. I remember thinking that that makes sense for brutal, fast-paced docudramas like Casino, but less sense for conventional story movies like Shutter Island.

  • Also Shutter Island was brilliant. The critics don't seem to like it, but it's really genius in the way it was shot. It's something that deserves to be viewed twice to really see the masterpiece come together.

  • @biggles1111 the 'crappy' cinematography was purely intentional. the continuation errors etc was supposed to emulate the way films were shot back in the 50s/60s to create the tone of the context it was set in.

  • Movie was decent enough, but it was, through a filmmakers point of view, horribly shot! Alot of continuing errors and such, really sloppy work. Not okay for a highbudgetfilm!

  • A lot of critics don't seem the praise Shutter Island as much as I think it should be! I though this film was fantastic and one of Marty's best pieces of work.

  • Richard Gere Dies!! Classic!!

  • I loved it too, but for completely different reasons, I didnt think it was silly at all
