  • thats really cool i never new that thanx i thought labs werent even guards but i didnt know they could be trained

  • @weboyz158 nope any dog is capable of being aggressive remember that. Look up aggressive golden retriever and aggressive lab. Thats why when you see a "friendly" breed of dog you should still ALWAYS ask before you pet it. Just because most are known for being nice doesnt make them all nice. Its how they are raised and trained. My lab hated people. He would growl if they tried to pet him but he wouldnt go out and attack and bark at strangers only if they hurt me or touched him.

  • i thought labs are to friendly to be guard dogs

  • @nikigurl08 What? Who's LIFE is on the line o__O It's a freaking SPORT, a GAME. The dogs bite a SLEEVE. There's a HUGE difference between a labrador and a Pomeranian, if you haven't noticed.

  • @Knucklehead281 Well that's why you buy a working line of dog and not a show or pet line dog. We got our Doberman from a breeder who breeds European Dobes with American Dobes. Now provided ours maybe only half if that European but the traits are pretty dominant in him. He's got the thicker frame, darker markings and he got a drive to protect. Now we got him as a pet and as a dog who would keep the house safe. I can only imagine a drive tho in 100% European Dobe tho or even a Rottie.

  • @nikigurl08 Yes those breeds do fine, but you have to remember the reason those particular breeds, (excluding the cane corso) have found success mainly in protection sports. Now IMO there is a difference between a sport work dog and a protection dog, particularly personal protection. And as far as availability, there are very few if any quality working lines anymore in a lot of American bred dogs unfortunately. Overbreeding and the show ring have diminished much of the former glory of many dogs.

  • @Knucklehead281 Yes im familiar with all those breeds. But im from the states so their not a common dog to see workin in bite work, because there not AKC breeds and a lot of them have to be imported which means their gonna be VERY expensive!! But yes they are good in their line of work, but so are Dobermans, Shepherds, Rottweilers and Cane Corsos, and other bully breeds which are easier to get a hold of and not NEARLY as expensive.

  • @gwenleblanc Huskies are working breeds, and they have a more powerful bite. And yea a dog may have the drive but if they dont have the build it does no good!! Especially when someone's LIFE is on the line! For example my Pomeranian has a drive, he's fearless and up for a challenge, he even acts like a bite work dog around ppl he doesn't know, but the big problem is he's under 10 lbs if someone kicks him reguardless of his DRIVE, he'll be a dead dog or a seriously injured.

  • @Knucklehead281 Well then why all this talk about labradors doing bad as protection dogs, since I was clearly talking about the schutzhund sport on my first comment. [my comment about a lab that drew blood was directed at the person who said they can't do damage.] I'm sorry if I didn't read comments you posted to other people, I was reading was you were responding to me.

  • @gwenleblanc I basically said that earlier if you read my first comment. I said that because of their athletic ability they do well in sport work, I was pointing out that schutzhund is no longer the standard for protection, there are many impractical things in schutzhund work. This is where a true guardian breed and true working breed will beat a hunting dog every time.
