Since the love of Imagineering often extends into the love of knowing how things operate backstage and where ideas spawn from, I've decided to gather a few of the storyboard sketches I made years ago for my own version of Indiana Jones Adventure to show why exactly I built these models and why they look the way they do.

I'm missing many of the scenes (filed somewhere amongst a million other papers..), but the key ones are there.

The story of this Indiana Jones Adventure revolves around the Mayan Calendar. Inside a temple, a huge stone calendar was discovered that would- if honoured with a visit -grant the ability to alter time and history so people could change their fortunes.
The spirits of the temple would not however grant this opportunity to people who aimed to use it for dishonest purposes, under penalty of death.

As expected, one amongst the riders had dishonest intentions, condemning the entire truckload to a horrible fate. The calendars teleports the truck to the gates of doom and so begins the crazy journey.

Also included at the end of the video is a look at the Big Room model I made in what would probably be considered "lights on" mode, to show what that looks like better and how from the outside it is just a cardboard box, reflective of how Disney's amazing rides are just metal sheds when viewed from the wrong side =)

When I track down the rest of the storyboard doodles I made, Ill probably make a full storyboard animatic.

  • Seriously... this is great. The time you put into this really shows. The drawings are amazing, and the concept for the ride is fresh and completely original. The spike scene during the actual ride is brilliant! It would be much more effective during the actual ride experience rather than the queue for the attraction. I also love the model of the "Cavern of Bubbling Death" scene. Very nice blend of Tokyo and California. This idea could go very far.

  • Thanks, glad you find it interesting and such =)

It's not really "original" though. I can't take credit for the original ride concept- I'm merely dressing up existing ideas and shoehorning new stories and features over the top.

The real hard work was already done this time =)

  • WOW GREAT JOB MAN!!! What drawing utensils did you use to draw all those amazing detailed drawings because it does not really seem to be something drawn by pencil.

  • What did you make the skull, walls, and well all of the model out of?

  • great drawings. it actually told the story really well with the music and all.

  • woah, you have a really good eye for perspective. this is really inspiring. I've always been interested in all this stuff (especially storyboard/ concept art). I'm going to start sketching again...

  • wow..........just wow....FREAKING ASOME

  • Strangely enough, my copy of the ride audio is just what I ripped from a CD I bought in the park on vacation, so as far as I'm aware... it should be official speed.

Where did you obtain your own copy? Is it perhaps the one from the ride's audio controlled itself, rather than a celebration CD mockup?
