During the spring of 2000, eleven girls aged 8 to 16 from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and two classrooms of middle and high school students were interviewed about their views on media culture and its impact on their lives.

Their insightful and provocative responses provide the central theme of the film, a half-hour examination of how the media presents girls. Juxtaposing footage culled from a typical week of TV broadcasting with original interviews, What a Girl Wants will provoke debate and, ideally, act as a catlyst for change in media content.

  • What a girl actually wants: varies by person. It's like saying what a boy wants. No two people are alike. Does a boy want to win a soccer championship, fly an airplane or maintain cars? Why do people have to pick one thing. Nothing is that simple in life. Perhaps she wants to wear a short top and be able to say no to sex. Makes sense to me.

  • theseee teen pop stars existed because THE PUBLIC WANTED that! the same is happening now with all this miley-selena-demi thing! PEOPLE ARE SICK! THEY WANT TO SEE YOUNG GIRLS EXPOSING THEMSELVES TIL THE BREAK DOWN! CHRISTINA AGUILERA IS NOT TO BLAME BEACUSE OF THAT, SHE WAS JUST PART OF THAT PRODUCTS... i blame the public, grown ppl doing this kind of videos and giving teens the WRONG messages and role models! period.

  • @qwexas

....Wha...? nah jk i get ya

  • There is what a girl wants, then there is what others want girls to want and not want. Guys don't want girls to want what guys don't want to give them, so to get anything at all from guys, girls need to act like they want what guys want them to want. We want others to want to give us what we want and to not want more from us than we want to give them. But we have to compromise or disguise our wants, or who would want us?

  • The Media is a PIMP, and then schizophrenically, it's a judge and jury too.

Media - Marketing - Pimp. Same thing.

And now ALL the big "rock stars" are pre-packaged, only some of them were a few decades ago. Elvis was packaged by his manager AFTER he was discovered out playing. Britney and I think Christina were Mouseketeers, now all the stars are like Pop-Tarts and Twinkies.

  • ha yea "leave of absence" shes off to china to teach them people about the media (:

  • whoa whoa whoa that girl at 2:05 is wearing wayyyyy too much makeup eww

  • my teacher showed this in class. I think she got fired....
