LiVES is hard to use, however there's lots of nice, and great features in it, that make it very powerful for video editing, like Blender, and Cinelerra. However still trying to find a good tutorial for this.

I try to use Lives. but it says that I need "composite" and "convert". but I can't find them anywhere :(

Haven't messed with this one in a long time, largely because last time I did, it was so unintuitive and generally painful to use - I'm about to give it another go though.
For simply splicing different clips together, Avidemux has worked great for me. If you want something a bit more in-depth, Kdenlive is quite nice, and while much newer and still a bit unstable, OpenShot shows a lot of promise. Google is your friend. :)

I can't get this to work either. I just want something to throw some damn clips together for a movie, why is that so hard on ubunutu!?! FFS, I can do most ANYTHING else BUT edit a video. Kino won't import ogg files right, gahhhh. I'm very frustrated today. I want to be principaled and use only open source to make my movies, but it's impossible with every program I've tried. Kino is the only one I can get to work even minimally, and that needs to convert everything to some HUGE dv file.
