  • Hey guys.....these videos were made for our first year high school chemistry course. Hence the lack of mechanisms and the purpose to have students memorize a few basic types of reactions. Glad so many people are enjoying them!!!

  • this is great, thank you so much! great review and study assistant.

  • good camera work...

  • isnt it pentanoate?

  • I have such a hard time with memorizing so much information. I don't hate organic chemistry, but wish I could understand it as well as others seem to.

  • isnt it pentanOate? or is that an english thing? propyl pentanoate

  • esterification goes both ways. it isn't a one way reaction. if you put water in ester you will take alcohol and acid

  • Memorize?? Shouldn't we LEARN and UNDERSTAND it?

  • Holy Morrison and Boyd! No, the reaction takes place along the carbonyl of the acid. The alcoxide group replaces the hydroxy group on the acid. Therefore, the hydroxy from the acid combines with the proton from the alcohol.

The carbonyl first becomes tetrahedral, then reverts to trigonal.
