'Pre-Indian' Mahavishnu on solo acoustic guitar, doing (or working on) 3 pieces. Recorded during the "Love Devotion Surrender" sessions.

As this was played before his Eastern musical tutorship (under Ravi Shankar initially), the playing sounds... quite 'normal'. But it does creep up on you, with repeated listening.

I (obviously) added the video/s later - considering the lack of footage, it's quite a good job. My next project is around Philip Catherine-era Focus (I've given up on my 1967 BBC broadcast of the Danny Thompson Trio for now).

Check the Playlist on my page - click the "avs002" - for other McLaughlin & Mahavishnu Orchestra videos. My home, as always, is: http://www.myspace.com/starrex

P.S. I've got a rare and wonderful old book by Ravi about music, how to play it (including raga theory), and his life in general - as well as the original MO songbook (even an instruction book on "Jazz Bass" by Rick Laird).

  • AUTHOR: Aaah, I love it - fools and cowards all around!!! Anyway, game over (YES, for the LAST time, it's HIM)!

I FINALLY have the PROPER 1972 stuff - Live in Munich". Check the 'video response'. That is, everyone EXCEPT the deadsh*ts (you know who you are).

  • AUTHOR'S NOTE/S: Sorry, I don't have time for the live 1972 solo concert (and it's too problematic without close-matching video).

Now, here is the DEFINITIVE answer to the BIG question - "Is it (not JML)?":

    a) YES it is,

    b) UNLESS it's either Carlos Santana or a mixture of both,

    c) as for the EXPERTS who "know" to the contrary, you really should question your motivation(s) - and don't forget Mark David Chapman.

  • If you've got the real footage with the real audio then put it up - people want to hear it. They don't want to hear you screwing around on guitar, pretending to be someone who's shoes you are not fit to clean.

  • Idiot! All the original video here was lifted from YouTube (e.g. first one - look for 'Lotus Feet' - John & Larry Coryell).

As for the "experts" who 'know' this isn't John, then maybe it's Carlos - google "Love Devotion Surrender sessions". I certainly hear John here (and myself, "in a silent way").

    And - everyone - watch my other JML videos. I've now got clips for 1963, 1965, 1967, 3 for 1970(!), 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975 and 2008 (just off my head - I missed a few).

    And thank me, next time!

  • THIS IS NOT ,REPEAT, NOT MAHAVISHNU JOHN!!!!!!!!

  • This ain't John McLaughlin. Sorry. Chords of C, F and G for some wanker who is a guitar wannabe.

  • To all of you self important arseholes who think you know everything...it is him ..it's

not him ....he's drunk... blah, blah ,blah... just enjoy the video for what it is and shut up...no one cares what you think

  • BOGUS!

  • Paul Orwell took this video

  • The audio is certainly not connected to this period video, JM or not, and if him, I can see why he would never release it as its at best warm up woodshedding with no aim or end in sight, so I could care less how much he drank or smoke when he was doing this ! I think it predates 1972 and My Goal's Beyond because its really lame and that album is awesome... perhaps its him noodling when he was in the Devotion album phase and wearing odd clothes and doing chemical amusement aids, pre - Chinmoy.

  • what an idiot you are avs002. I guess this is supposed to be funny but it is not.

  • So much for music enthuasists. I think the playing is rather nice regardless.

  • It does not sound like JM at all. A real mash of crap. If it is JM, he must have been drunk off his ass.

  • @aniamls And what I mean by vampish is that hover over one chord for a long time, everybody knows McLaughlin burns through four or five chords with one run!!
