Charles A. Straley was born May 2, 1878 in Hall, PA. which is in York County, where he lived until about 18 years of age.

After his father's death, he took a job a job in Helen, PA in about 1897. Helen, also in York, about 5 miles from the Susquehanna, on the Lincoln Highway. During the nearly three years he was in Helen, he met and married Rosa Kraut in 1902. In September of that year he moved to Maytown, PA and established a home and Harness making business there.

The voice you hear on the video is not narration, but rather Charles' actual voice briefly recounting his life. It was taped in Maytown, by his son Luther, shortly before his father's death.

Over the years he expanded his business with the times to sell bicycles, automobile tires and other hardware items. They had 5 children who lived to adulthood: Luther - a Lutheran Minister, George - military veteran and assistant editor of the Lutheran Magazine, Mary Ellen Straley Foerster - School Teacher and Minister's wife, Martha Elizabeth {Betty} Straley Robinson - Journalist, and Esther Straley McBride - Educator. All of their children are now also deceased, except for Esther.

Rosa died in 1953, just after the couple's 50th Anniversary. Eight months later he married his former pastors wife, Lola Yingst.

Charles continued to operate the store until 1957 when the business was sold. He and Lola moved from the site of the store on East High to a duplex located a door or two from the Maytown Bank on West High. He remained a resident of Maytown until his death in 1966.
