"Etude Fantastique" from Quatre Morceaux Op. 12

Georgy Catoire (1861-1926) was a remarkable Russian composer who operated outside of the nationalist school. His music training was formed mostly abroad: he studied with Karl Klindworth (pupil of Liszt) and was an avid Wagnerite. Catoire later returned to Russia and met Tchaikovsky, who praised his compositions and sent him to study with Rimsky-Korsakov. Catoire's compositional career was not successful and for some years he lived as a recluse. However, in 1919 he was appointed professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory and remained a respected pedagogue until his death. Alexander Goldenweiser was a champion of Catoire's music and recorded some of his chamber music including the violin sonatas and Piano Trio in F minor Op. 14. Catoire's earliest music reflects the cosmopolitan late Romanticism of Tchaikovsky, early to middle Scriabin, and at times, French impressionism.

  • Very elegant piano writing.

  • wow I love this composition! it took a few listens to understand the direction of it but like the 4th time the assertion of the melody at like 1:40 just hit me as what the piece was building up to the whole time, it was very cool.
