I'm pretty sure he figured this by ear. Try to learn few Metallica's solos and put them together, Kirk's solos are really "simple", he use same tones but it still sounds great and he's my favourite guitarist...

where did you get these tabs i've been LOOKING FOR EVER! trying to learn it but i could never find them
