This is a WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator video I recorded to show my metropolitan area weather conditions from Central Park in New York City on February 22, 2008 at 12:05 PM Eastern Standard Time.

This was truly the first significant winter storm of the season. After only five inches had fallen in New York City's Central Park through last Thursday, the season snowfall total more than doubled when this was all said and done.

Six inches of snow fell at Central Park on Friday, putting the season snowfall total there at 11.7 inches, still below normal through February 22nd.

The precipitation moved into the region from the south and west during the overnight hours on Friday and it had not stopped snowing prior to when this weather update was made.

A Winter Storm Warning was in effect until 1:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Saturday morning.

Winds off the Atlantic Ocean brought in warmer air later in the day and that meant for at the very least the coastal areas as well as the city itself saw a changeover from all snow to a mixed bag of precipitation with snow, sleet and freezing rain later in the afternoon. The distant northern and western suburbs did not see this happen as quickly.

Generally 6 to 9 inches of snow fell in most locations, except on Long Island and the New Jersey coast given the longer period of a wintry mix that kept snowfall accumulations lower. Temperatures were expected to rise into the mid 30s during Friday afternoon.

The music track I used was done by who is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite artists of those used on The Weather Channel for their "Local on the 8s" segments. Joyce Cooling's 1999 hit song "Before Dawn" has been on the network's February 2008 playlist.

This video was created for personal entertainment use only (meaning not for any commercial broadcast that would violate copyright law). Downloading and reposting this video on YouTube or any other video sharing web site is not permitted. All images (except for the regional radar map itself) are emulated in appearance to resemble graphically what the local forecast segments looked like on The Weather Channel during primarily the 1990s.

  • OMG

When I was little, smooth jazz was all I would listen to. This was one of my FAVORITE smooth jazz songs, too!!!!

I need to start listening to this again...it's so soothing!

    Thanks for the upload!!

    5/5

    Faved it!!!

    Absolutely ADORE this song!

    ^_^

  • Glad you love it! Joyce Cooling is awesome. Anytime her music is played during the "Local on the 8s" segments on The Weather Channel, I intentionally make sure I'm listening. It's her kind of tunes I can listen to anytime, especially to get me in a good mood.

  • the forecast is so damn old...i remember watching this when iwas a little kid

  • The current conditions and forecast data were completely live at the time of recording my emulator video. This is from the WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator, not actually from The Weather Channel. I explained this in the video notes. The look of the old "Local on the 8s" is certainly a blast from the past.

  • Me too. Stay tuned for at least two more from Joyce Cooling... that I promise you! :)
