As someone who goes to school for visual effects, i can tell you visual and special effects are completely different things, that requirea completely different degree and major at my school...
-Visual Effects=post production work, all CGI/compositing elements, basically everything thats done on the computer after the footage has been shot.
-Special Effects=consists of everything physically done on set while shooting from explosions to make-up,doo dooo do doooo,the more you know.

I do have to agree that special and visual effects are the same thing, or at least very close. Supposedly Visual effects is a sub catagory of Special Effects.

its called a breakdown dumbass...it was a requirement for a compositing class of mine..(and btw, its not "green screening", its called chroma keying and color correcting, EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT lol.
