There has been a lot of controversey lately about Bill Shanahan. But one thing you cannot deny is that he has a tremendous amount of authentic and even loving passion for debate.

In this clip, just one among many he discusses the sheer joy of competition and the magic that is possible when one experiences a life-changing debate round. He says this is only possible when one is open to it.

Bill's passion sometimes gets the best of him, but it's also the very thing that makes the joy and magic that he speaks about possible. I sometimes wonder if many of us would not be better off with a little more passion in our lives--consequences be damned.

Shanahan, competition is fine, as long as there is some decency and decorum. However, when your passion overcomes your ability to reason, showing your ass in public, is NOT "showing how much you care about everyone is the room". That silly claim is pure, self-serving BULLSHIT, showing just how emotionally distorted your rationalization had become. Your only valid claim was the admission that you behaved as an asshole, and I believe you felt proud, although you should certainly feel ashamed.

Bill, as a debate coach you should know you can't have it both ways. First you claim it's not about winning or losing and it's not about a 3.0 or 2.1. However, when the black gentleman in the middle of the room stressed that it's all about fleshing out ideas and learning from the sharing of different viewpoints, you insist that it's all about "the framework of competition" and it's the competition that matters. You claim no one would come to listen if it were just to hear diverse ideas.
