Lady GaGa : Poker Face - VIOLA TRIO COVER (split screen) * "HQ" --- Make sure you watch in "High Quality"
This is the 11th video in my continuing series of classicalized popular music. The song was requested by so many people its hard to point the finger at any one. The original video of the song may be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ5uCfwK6qw
This performance is the 6th of my split screen videos where I play with myself, and the 2nd where I play a trio with myself. It's all about the viola this time, just like Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.6, a concerto for strings, yet it features no violin parts. I steal my ideas from the masters of course. To do this video, I listened to the original song and by ear wrote out a sheet music score, then arranged it as a trio for 3 violas, and then performed it. I recorded each part separately. I was able to sync up and mix the 3 parts on my computer with a sound wave editor. To do the split screen, I used AviSynth (scripting based video editing and effects utility) in combination with VirtualDubMod (a free video editing utility) to sync up and render the two videos into a single split screen video. The sound then had to be synced to the 3 videos playing simultaneously and properly mixed. My AviSynth script for this video:
viola1 = crop(AVISource("N:\PokerFace\VIOLA_1.avi"),256,0,-60,0)
viola2 = crop(AVISource("N:\PokerFace\VIOLA_2.avi"),192,0,-136,0)
viola3 = crop(AVISource("N:\PokerFace\VIOLA_3.avi"),188,0,-128,0)
video = StackHorizontal(viola1,AddBorders(crop(viola2,4,0,0,0),4,0,0,0,$000000),AddBorders(crop(viola3,4,0,0,0),4,0,0,0,$000000))
audio = WAVSource("N:\PokerFace\pokerFace_CLEANED_SOUND_STEREO-mix-44100_s1_final.wav")
AudioDub(video, audio)
Trim(0,7078)
Other technical considerations: I am still looking for the ideal codec and format for youtube. What I eventually uploaded was something that makes use of thier high quality widescreen format, my source is 960x540 H264/AVC in an MP4 container at a bitrate of 3360kbps -- converted by: "Super (Version 35)". I am not happy with the video quality in youtube's low quality version, it jitters like its dropping frames, but if you click on HQ, in my tests it played very smoothly and clearly. Other notes: My camera has been through hell and back, but it mostly works still. The audio is crackly intermittently, the video is ghosty ... so buy me one of those new hi-def cameras ... only about $3,500 for a half way decent one :)
For those that do not know what a viola is, its basically like the violin but bigger and lower sounding. It plays 5 notes or about half an octave lower than a violin, on the notes it shares with violin the viola sounds deeper, and it reads a different clef (alto) for its sheet music. Description of a viola for violinists: "A big honkin violin, missing the E string at the top of the range and gaining a C string at the bottom of the range and reads a funny looking clef". Also, in a survival situation, the viola would be preferred, as it burns longer. The viola is just a Knilling student model, 17 inch.
i saw this in my music class but only halfway through so i wanted to see it all the way

@epichealer101 -- Cool! Tips? Maybe a general tip like always be aware of the contact between the bow and the string. Its things like bow speed, bow pressure, bow location, how the bow just "feels" on the string. You know, things I need to do better myself. But really, there are no magic words or anything I can say, except the ones that are backed up by hard work, sweat, and tears. I'm thinking of words like practice, patience, perseverance, and persistence. 頑張って下さい。
