  • This definitely presents a conflict of interest . Since the hosting service is also the provider of your domain name, as a registree, you are more susceptible to being locked in to premium fees, and losing content hosted on that domain name if you opt for an alternate hosting service. It is more beneficial as a registree to keep your domain name and hosting services separate to circumvent issues regarding the hosting service charging more for providing the same service.

  • yes, it is the "getting locked in" part that i am shy about

  • I still disagree. This outlook is outdated. Firstly, you could by all kinds of services for any period, some services its even monthly. Ultimately, you need to choose a hosting service that allows convenient use, reliable service and has a bunch of sub-services that you can buy. For e.g: blog service, shopping cart system etc. The ONLY possible argument against even going into a telephone plan (ultimate prices on telephones) is being locked. This is really inapplicable today...

  • Tim, do you mean "by all kinds" or "buy all kinds"

  • That's a great tip. And a very good explanation using the phone company example. I was under the misconception that choosing a hosting company that offers a domain name too would be a real time saver and would save me the inconvenience of transferring domain names access from one company to another.

  • Another serious con of having your domain name and hosting service together is that in even initiating a domain name transfer to a different registrar the hosting service you are currently with, upon knowledge of this can decide to completely nullify the domain, deleting several hours of work . That situation is disastrous especially if no back up was kept.

  • I see a lot of disagreements with this video, and I can see where its coming from. Speaking from personal experience of having a separate hosting company and a domain registrar the only reason I did that was to not put all my eggs in one basket, not because of being locked in. However if you are not internet savvy you might get locked into extending your domain + hosting when you only wanted to renew only 1 of those services. (more work/time consuming for you to opt out)

  • It is ideal to have a separate domain registrar from your web hosting service because it gives you that flexibility to switch between the two if one or the other is merely generating more problems for you as opposed to accomodating you with a good service. It also helps you manage things better. Not to mention, save more money than you would with the same hosting service and domain registrar.

  • Using two separate domain registrars and web hosting services saves you tremendously in terms of power to choose the type of service desired. It allows you to be flexible and change service in terms of bandwidth related issues and gives you power to switch over to another provider who can provide a better service.

  • I actually completely agree with Timur's approach to this situation. The services offered now by hosting websites are very flexible and are renewed on either monthly or an annual basis. You are not compelled to stick to one host, since all the material belongs to you and you would have already backed the information on your own personal server. The hosting site cannot withhold such information as ransom, not to mention the relatively cheap switching costs.
