1 Terabyte is 1000/1024 Gigabytes. In this case he's talking about hard drive capacity.

@petegrimsby and @Thaed too !! ...sorry Thaed, but I actually would tend to believe it would be powerful enough to do this (assuming a 100 Mb network speed ) : we're talking reads from HD sent to network here ! ..and I have read about setups on PIII computer with several drives ! so just go ahead man and give it a try !! ...regarding the data corruption, I dont know anything, good or bad, about it.... in anyway , good luck!

A very critical step is missing. You did not cover how to set this up so that other computers have access to it. It is not as "brain dead easy" as you said. It is not simply plugging it into a wireless router and bam every PC on your router can access it.
Hi mate ..wondering if yu could help us out if your experiance. i want to use a CPU
Intel Celeron D 3.06GHz 775 socket with 1gb of ram. will his be powerfull enugh to stream to video files to ...2 diffrent computers ?also i only want to use 1 hard drive and iv heard freenas 7 can curupt the hard drive and you lose all your data. have you ever had this problem ? i really cant lose all my 300 odd g films lol

@petegrimsby Doubt it will be powerful enough. While I've had good luck with FreeNAS even the creators tell you to make backups. It's not just the software that can fail.

I plan on doing this with an old athlon 1800+ pc. My network on that motherboard is 100. How much would that limit the speed of my NAS? Should I put a gigabit card in to increase the speed?
myriadcorp 5 months ago
@myriadcorp If you do, get CAT6 cable too. It will increase the speed somewhat.

@HPKWI Marcus for this version, the cd stays in! If you want to see how to do a USB drive version, watch my 8TB video. For more tech support, go to the forums on the freeNAS site. Google freeNAS and follow the links. Good luck!
