  • @Michael326 The use of the word "obsession" in the context of this documentary doesn't strike me as wholly negative, rather it is used to illustrate how important Dr.Cushing's work was to him. Perhaps he was a genious, but the passion for knowledge consumed him to the point of neglecting his duties as a husband and father. Yet it was this same all-consuming passion which led to some of the greatest innovations in medicine. I certainly don't disagree that he was extremely gifted.

  • @Shivasavasana There's a difference between obsession, which has the potential to produce diminishing returns, and ingenious or innovative, which produces discovery.

I'd argue that creating an entire facet of surgery is not only ingenious, but innovative for the time as well.

Ingenious because Dr. Cushing was, in fact, a genius and talented in multiple areas of Medicine aside from just surgery.

Innovative because operating on the brain was considered impossible at the time, yet he did it.

  • @Michael326 Depends on how you define obsession. Those who are truly obsessed with the quest for knowledge are the ones who make the most innovations. They also say he singlehanded created Neurosurgery, is that a bad thing too? I'm jealous of that kind of obsession.

  • Dont worry it`s not brain surgery...

it might be rocket science though :D

  • It's funny that the BBC would refer to Harvey Cushing as "obsessive." What about enlightened, ingenious, or innovative? All words that cannot nearly begin to describe the sheer magnitude of the achievements that Cushing made given the time period he lived in.

  • a lol

  • Why would you do this to me? I was going to get some sleep tonight, but now I have to stay up and watch every single episode of this, otherwise I won't be able to think about anything tomorrow but how I can't wait to get home and watch the rest. CURSE YOUR FASCINATING VIDEOS.
