According to Bob Feldman (one of the song's composers), he witnessed a teenage girl and her friends charging to a booth in a Brooklyn malt shop in early 1963. The girl screamed at a boy siiting in the booth about him going around the 'hood calling her a tramp and that her boyfriend, who was in the army, returning to beat the crap out of the boy in the booth.

The Angels recorded the original song, which was intended as a demo for The Shirelles, but the studio liked The Angels' demo so much they released their song instead.
Within weeks, The Chiffons released a cover of The Angels' song. Martha and The Vandellas did as well.
