March 16, 2009: Monsignor Angelo Amodeo, a canon of the Metropolitan Chapter of Milan, celebrated Holy Mass in Rome according to the Usus Antiquior in the private house chapel of Prince Massimo in Rome's historic center. Monsignor Amodeo was ordained priest in 1957 by Archbishop Montini, future Pope Paul VI.

  • I think it goes beyond the question of language. The ceremony/ritual of the Latin Mass is more theologically superior in manifesting publicly our true and acceptable worship to God. The Mass is not just a meal it is Christ's unbloody sacrifice on the cross being done on the altar...after Vatican II the mass has gone astray more of a theatre or entertainment more than sacred worship

  • @itcanales29 I agree completely!

  • @itcanales29 That is not the belief of the one and only Catholic church.

  • @phati129 The Mass is a memorial of the Last Supper AND of the sacrifice of the Cross. In it, Christ offers Himself to God in an unbloody manner under the appearances of bread and wine. It's the same sacrifice as Cavalry because the victim and the principal priest are the same, Christ. It's different from Calvary because Jesus is not physically crucified again. He died once for the remission of sins and can die no more. The entire Church benefits from the Mass even if said with no congregation.

  • @phati129 "Liturgy" does not mean "work of the people". It means a "public service". A Mass said by a priest with just one server attending is still THE public service of the Church, the grace of which benefits the entire Church, not just those present, or just those who receive the Eucharist in its context. The order for sine populo Masses were included in Missal translations of the First and Second Vatican Councils. Again, look it up.

  • @phati129 You are incorrect. Canon Law says: 904. Remembering always that in the mystery of the Eucharistic sacrifice the work of redemption is exercised continually, priests are to celebrate...even if the faithful cannot be present.. Can. 906 states that the priest is to be assisted by at least one server when saying a private Mass.

Look up "Sine populo". A private Mass is of spiritual benefit to the entire Church. Do you ever pray for people not present? Learn your faith.

  • @lichtbroeder a private mass? now that says Jesus all over it..... I am Catholic and very traditional but a private does no good. Its a Liturgy from the greek, Liturgia which means the work of the people. It might be awesome for the priest but for the growth of the universal church its no good.

  • @phati129 Boring? The priest seems to be saying a private Mass, the efficacy of which is every bit as great as that of a Mass said audibly, with lay participation. The Mass you are witnessing here conveys grace, and Christ is present on the altar. If that isn't NON-boring, I don't know what is.

  • what a boring and univiting way to celebrate. Pope Pius said that the prayers of the priest should be heard and participation of the lay should be more, in respect to the "old" mass.

  • "The private house chapel of Prince Massimo". Wow. It immediately brings me to the times of the Barberinis, the Borgias, the Sforzas, the De'Medicis, the Chigis, the Borgheses and so many of these ancient Italian noble families.
