Delorean and Jonh Talabot plays Sunshine just some days before of their performance at Sónar 2010.

Is it true that the new music coming out of Barcelona sounds like the shining sun, and throughout the city there is happiness and joy? From the point of view of the people of Barcelona themselves --go out in the street and do a survey and the answer is likely to always be the same-- Barcelona isn't paradise, in fact it can be harder and a much more inhospitable city than it seems, especially if you have to work there all year round, if you don't have any money, and if you're not there on holiday. However, as we suggested just now, it's true that the new music of Barcelona --at least the best of what is being made-- sounds like a shining sun. That luminous and open sound is like the summer sky, porous and warm, entering through the skin like the midday sunshine and activating the hidden pleasure centres in the brain. Melanin is the new serotonin, we're telling you. In recent months, if there has been a hymn that has defined the sound of this Mediterranean city, then it's "Sunshine", eight minutes of disco-house wrapped in gentle tribal percussion and a shower of photons that appeared in June of 2009 via the Hivern label. It was put out by John Talabot, a young producer who divides his music between the aforementioned Hivern and the German record company Permanent Vacation. The 500 copies of the first pressing of the record disappeared unusually quickly, and it has been put out again recently —on blue vinyl and with gift stickers— backed with remixes by Blondes and Delorean. This latter group, of course, are the other act epitomizing the new sound of Barcelona.

Delorean opened their studio doors to us for a very special date. They got together to play a special version of "Sunshine", keeping the original structure and textures of the song but playing their instruments played in real time —the rhythm with the stiff regularity of a metronome— and calling in John Talabot, who's a good friend of the group, to complete the performance. We went in with two cameras and recorded the event; you can only see John Talabot's arms and a little of his jumper —he still doesn't want to show his face, who can he be?— but you can see he's at ease handling the laptop and keyboards. Delorean, for their part, play neatly, so that the wonder that is "Sunshine" can grow gently and wrap you in its unfolding, warm embrace. It would be a wonderful addition to their live repertoire alongside the compositions featured on their new LP, "Subiza" (Mushroom Pillow, 2010), our soundtrack for the coming months. We were witnesses to a unique moment. Enjoy.
